Lucky No. 13! (37867)
Lucky No. 13! (37866)

Phew! We are still here! That Mayan calendar had it wrong? Shocking! I don’t believe it!

Though not the end of the world, it is the end of another year. Some are happy to see 2012 go with all of its disappointments, frustrations and loss, while for others, it marked the birth of opportunities, beginnings and new life. Congratulations to my bestie, Raquel, on the birth of her son Spencer Grant on 12/12/12, baby!

I imagine those who awaited the Dec. 21 rapture that never was, as well as the generally superstitious, can’t be too excited about entering the 13th year of this century. At least its first day falls on a Tuesday. Had it been a Friday, who knows what might have happened?

As I do every year, but maybe even more so for the unlucky 2013, here is my recipe for our “good luck” black-eyed peas, aka “Hoppin’ John.”
