The Holidays at the Apollo program on Saturday, Dec. 15, was awesome. The all-day festivities began with Coca-Cola Winter Wonderland, a free event for the community with lots of activities and photos with Santa, performances by Harlem-based choirs and a toy drive. Later that evening, the Apollo hosted its Amateur Night Holiday Special.
The holiday show was filled with amazing child dancers, musicians and singers who are past winners of Amateur Night. They were great, and the special guests were the popular OMG Girlz (co-headliners for the 2012 Scream Tour, featured on VH1’s “Family Hustle”). The group consists of three girls: Star–Zonnique Pullins, 16; Beauty–Bahja Rodriguez, 15; and Babydoll–Breaunna Womack, 17. The three girls say their message is all about being individual, and sisterhood.
OMG Girlz are nominated for Outstanding New Artist of the Year for the upcoming NAACP Awards.
They are signed to the Interscope record label. They did two great performances and the crowd of young spectators rushed to the stage. Later, the OMG Girlz signed autographs in the lobby of the Apollo.
Also performing were great and young Apollo legends such as Kai Rivera, the Midas Touch, Matthew Whitaker, Mirei Tohyama, Solomon Hicks, Andrew Malabunga, Tiffany Obi, Michael Woodard, Lianah Sta. Ana, Arianna Hanson, Austin Paul Jr. and Hannah Richardson.
There was no booing, no favorites and no bad performances. They were all talented young people. The ones who really stood out included Kai Rivera, an 8-year-old break-dancer from Teaneck, N.J., and Matthew Whitaker, a blind 11-year-old prodigy, who is a composer and a musician, from Hackensack, N.J. It was a great evening of entertainment and fun, and the host, comedian Talent, kept everyone laughing.
