Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s New York Education Reform Commission released preliminary recommendations to improve education in New York state’s school system. The 25-member commission released nine recommendations that would include longer schools days for students, a full day of school for prekindergarten students from low-income neighborhoods, integrating more technology into classroom instruction with competitive grants, and expanding career and technical education programming to bridge the gap from high school to college, among others. The commission is expected to convene in the fall to expand on the recommendations.
The New York Education Commission, created in April, includes Harlem Children’s Zone founder and CEO Geoffrey Canada.
