On Wednesday, Feb. 6, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz welcomed New York City’s new Youth Poet Laureate Ashley August to Borough Hall. August, a native of East Flatbush, is the second consecutive youth poet laureate from Brooklyn, replacing fellow Brooklynite Ishmael Islam. August was joined by Michael Cirelli, executive director of Urban Word NYC, which oversees the youth poet laureate program, along with the New York City Campaign Finance Board. Also present was Onida Coward-Mayers, executive director of the New York City Voter Assistance Commission.
