The Communication Workers of America (CWA) Local 1180 endorsed City Councilman Robert Jackson for Manhattan borough president on Tuesday. Citing his “energy, principles and priorities,” the union felt that Jackson would be the right man for the job.

Jackson’s endorsements now include the Sandhogs Union, the Stagehands Union, Local 147, IATSE Local One and the United Federation of Teachers (UFT). CWA Local 1180 President Arthur Cheliotes cites Jackson’s start from the bottom and his ability to understand the plight of the working class as one of the many reasons for his union’s endorsement.

“When it comes to standing up and fighting for what is right, no one works harder, no one speaks louder and no one has more courage and energy than Robert Jackson,” said Cheliotes in a statement. “Robert comes from poverty and has never stopped working to knock down barriers and create opportunity for others.

“He has fought for jobs and better working conditions, affordable housing and accessible health care and has been tireless in fighting for every child to receive a good public school education,” Cheliotes continued. “He knows how to get things done and has a record to prove it. Robert Jackson will make a great borough president and we are excited to join his team and help him win.”

In a release, the CWA also cited Jackson’s lawsuit against New York State to fix the inequitable school funding distribution formula that he felt cheated New York City children. The release also cited his City Council positions as chair of the education committee and as co-chair of the City Council’s Black, Latino and Asian caucuses.

Jackson was pleased to receive his latest recommendation.

“This is a major endorsement because this is a union that not only supports candidates, but whose members really work to make a difference,” said Jackson. “It is another sign of the momentum we are feeling as we build a large and diverse grassroots campaign that is moving this campaign forward. I look forward to working with CWA 1180 to win this campaign. Together, we can make a difference for families today and for generations to come.

“I’m honored to receive the endorsement of CWA Local 1180,” said Jackson.
