The Manhattan borough president’s office released a new report finding that Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s MWBE initiative falls short of its goals. Specifically, the report finds that only 25.5 percent of the 500 minority- and-women-owned businesses surveyed said they won a city contract.
The report, “Growing Gotham: A Survey of New York City Minority and Women Business Enterprises and a Roadmap for Economic Growth,” found only 881 of MWBEs received contracts in 2012 out of the 3,526 certified business firms. The report further sites that 55 percent of respondents reported not having proper support and resources to apply for contracts. Bloomberg signed the law in 2005 and expanded the law in 2013. The law governing the program is intended to increase the number of MWBEs in New York City.
