On April 10, a number of City Council members and hip-hop rappers united on the step of City Hall to denounce lyrics in a rap song that they claim condones date rape.Council Members Andy King, Julissa Ferreras, Letitia James, Diane Reyna and Darlene Mealy and others called for the public to “not support these artists, their shows or their music.”
The lyrics that are drawing criticism particularly come from Rick Ross’ single “U.O.E.N.O. (You Ain’t Even Know It).” In the song, Ross says he “put molly in the champagne/you don’t even know it/I took her home and enjoying that/she don’t even know it.” The rapper has apologized for the song on Twitter, but many are still calling for action to denounce the message behind the lyrics.
