Readying himself to submit a proposal to the Department of Education, school principal Adofo Muhammad aims to create a brand-new public high school focused on promoting leadership qualities in students. Using a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) template, Muhammad, head of the top-rated Brooklyn Bedford Academy High School, said, “We are trying to fill the void of a lack of institutional leaderships in our young people. We want them to take the mantle of leadership in their own development and formulate a political voice in America. “

The working title for the new school is the Academy for Leadership and Educational Excellence.

“We are taking the best of what we have academically in Bedford Academy and Benjamin Banneker high schools, which serve predominantly Black and Latino students.”
