The Liberty are fighting hard to overcome the season-ending loss of Essence Carson, who tore her ACL on June 9. They proved to themselves and head coach Bill Laimbeer that they are up to the task as they hustled to a 78-68 victory over the tough Connecticut Sun.
Cappie Pondexter scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed five rebounds. They skipped happily off the court after the win, which upped their early-season record to 3-2. They got a great defensive effort from Kara Braxton, as well as prime-time performances from Plenette Pierson, Alex Montgomery and Leilani Mitchell.
The Liberty will return to action on Sunday, June 23, when they host San Antonio at their home away from home, the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. They will then hit the road for a June 28 game at Seattle.
