Serial rapist targeting Black sorority members in Texas (40128)

Delta Sigma Theta is celebrating its 100th year anniversary with an international centennial torch tour. The tour kicks off in New York City on Thursday, June 27. Fittingly, the sorority’s motto is “Intelligence is the Torch of Wisdom.”

From June 27 through July 1 the Centennial will be held at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, located at 515 Malcolm X Blvd. in Harlem. The exhibit will highlight the sorority’s century of service and scholarship.

A full day of events will take place on Saturday, June 29, including a march against violence, Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) presentations and tree planting with MillionTreesNYC. The sorority’s national president, Cythia M. A. Butler-McIntyre, is also expected to attend the events.

“The 22 collegiate and alumnae chapters of the New York Metropolitan Area are extremely excited to welcome the TORCH to New York,” stated Leyonna Barba, president of the New York Alumnae Chapter, in a press release.

Delta Sigma Theta was founded in January 1913 at Howard University, a historically black university in Washington, D.C. The nonprofit group has been involved in social activism since its participation in the Women Suffrage March just months after its founding.

All events are free to the public during the celebratory weekend. For more information on the upcoming events, visit their Facebook page.
