This month’s dance calendar begins Thursday, Aug. 1 with Kyle Abraham/Abraham.in.Motion, part of Lincoln Center’s Out of Door Festival at Damrosch Park Bandshell. Abraham.in.Motion will share the evening with Marc Bamuthi Joseph and the Living Word Project.
Abraham will present his critically acclaimed 2012 work “Pavement,” which “was inspired by John Singleton’s 1991 film ‘Boyz N The Hood’ and informed by Abraham’s teenage years in historically Black Pittsburgh neighborhoods. The work features music ranging from J.C. Bach, Jacques Brel and Benjamin Britten to Sam Cooke and Donny Hathaway.”
“It sits in your throat, burning. And it stays with you,” wrote the Washington Post.
Barmuthi Joseph and the Living Word Project will present the “choreopoem in the form of a narrative verse play ‘Word Becomes Flesh,’ conceived and written by Marc Bamuthi Joseph and performed by the Living Word Project.” Described as “a meditation on fatherhood, race, parental responsibility and absence, [and] was originally a solo spoken word piece in the form of letters Bamuthi wrote to his unborn son to document nine months of pregnancy from a young, single father’s perspective.” Barmuthi Joseph is now joined by five actor-dancers and a DJ.
All events are free at Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors Festival. For information, visit www.LCOutofDoors.org or call 212-875-5766.
