On Tuesday afternoon, a vociferous group in Harlem gave its support for the right of Zimbabweans to elect their own leaders without outside interference. The December 12th Movement, the Freedom Party and Friends of Zimbabwe led a rally to announce that the harmonized elections taking place in Zimbabwe on July 31 were not only critical for Zimbabwe, but would also point the way forward for African development. Organizers demanded that the United States respect the rights of the people of Zimbabwe and end its illegal sanctions against the country.

The December 12th Movement’s Omowale Clay said, “It is widely believed that a key factor for Zimbabwean voters will be President Robert Mugabe’s fight to make indigenization of the economy a major campaign issue and the responsibility of African leadership who want to develop their country.”
