It’s been a hot summer, and it was probably even hotter for your furry pet. Luckily, there are several places in Harlem that offer great opportunities for shade and activities for your pet. Likewise, many pet-owners in Harlem told the AmNews that early morning and late afternoon walks were better to ensure that their dogs are not too over-heated during morning strolls.

“Dogs are really low to the ground, and they will get most of the heat,” said Tammy Swan, who often walks her dog Nori near Morningside Park.

Morningside Park, with its nearly 13-block-long stretch of grass and trees, seemed to be a favorite among Harlem pet-owners. Both Morningside Park and Marcus Garvey Park offer shady options for walks and dog runs, where you can let your pet off its leash to play with other dogs.

For some dog-owners, quality time will be spent outside of walks, too. Lucille Harris has had her dog Simba for two months and said she will take Simba almost everywhere she goes.

“Outdoor festivals, parks—I’ll take Simba anywhere that has running water,” said Harris.
