The nation has now learned more about the shooting on Capitol Hill that left one woman dead and two law enforcement officers injured.

The women involved in the incident has been identified as African-American, 34-year-old Miriam Carey, a mother and dental hygienist from Sanford, Conn. Carey is Brooklyn native.

Video of the incident shows Carey driving a black Infiniti G37 coupe at an accelerated rate through Washington DC near several government buildings including the White House and Capitol building. Police fired 17 shots at the vehicle after Carey rammed it into a police car. Her 18-month-old daughter was in the back seat of the vehicle during the chase but was not hurt.

Reports indicate she tried to crash her car at the White House security barriers. Surrounded by police, Carey drove off toward the Capitol building where police shot and killed her. No weapon was found in the vehicle or on Carey.

A Capitol police officer and Secret Service officer were injured during the incident.

The Capitol building itself was placed on lockdown with a shelter in place advisory sent to staffers.

Carey’s one-year-old daughter was taken into protective custody. Her family lives in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.

Why Carey tried to crash her car into White House security barriers remains unclear. The FBI searched Carey’s apartment in Connecticut and no information has been released on whether or not any evidence has been found.

However, the FBI did say that the incident was isolated and that Carey had no terrorist motives.

Carey’s mother told the media that her daughter showed signs of mental illness and suffered from postpartum depression. No definite answer has been given on Carey’s mental state during her encounter with police at the capitol.

“It’s like anyone else. How would you feel, you know? You see these things happen to people and you wonder how did this happen,” said Eric Sanders, the family’s attorney and spokesman. “It’s out of the ordinary, so of course they’re shocked as family members as well as how this whole thing occurred because no one really knows the exact circumstances of how this really occurred. That’s a whole other part of this investigation on the family’s side.”

An online memorial has been setup for Carey on Facebook. As of Friday morning the page had over 2,300 “likes.”

Thursday’s shooting at the nation’s capitol comes just over two weeks after the Washington Navy Yard shooting where 34-year-old Aaron Alexis went on a shooting rampage killing 12 people. He was killed by law enforcement.
