The Greater New York Chapter of the Links Inc. joined 1,000 participants in the inMotion Story by Story race to climb 43 stories of the 245 Park Ave. skyscraper to raise funds to cover free legal services for victims of domestic violence. The event raised over $600,000. The Greater New York Chapter of the Links’ “Links to Empowerment” team exceeded their fundraising goal by 30 percent to raise $10,663 in contributions. This is the fourth year of the Story by Story Stair Climb, and the donations have continued to increase annually.
The Links to Empowerment team for the inMotion stair climb, led by Link Co-Chairs Charlita Cardwell and Rosemonde Pierre-Louis, included Greater New York Link Chapter members, several spouses and the staff and victims from the Urban Women’s Retreat (UWR) shelter, which houses and protects victims from the upper Manhattan, Harlem and Washington Heights areas. Over 27 Links and UWR representatives participated in the 43-story stair climb. Climbers also included virtual walkers who could not physically make the climb.
The Greater New York Chapter’s National Trends and Services Committee has dedicated its time and resources under the chapter’s umbrella program to address the issue of domestic violence as part of the local community service programs provided by the Links. Domestic violence has escalated over the years and is disproportionately affecting women of color and their children. The chairs of the National Trends Committee are Links Linda Zango-Haley and C. Virginia Fields.
