Out with the old, in with the old? The Jets released two of its highest profile players in cornerback Antonio Cromartie and wide receiver Santonio Holmes on Monday. Both players had a high cap number and are on the wrong side of 29, which, in the NFL, usually leads to being released.
But it could be addition by subtraction with a familiar face, as Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback and former Jet Darrelle Revis was expected to be released by Tuesday. With him possibly on the market, could we see a reunion? It wouldn’t be a shock in today’s NFL, where money usually does the talking.
And let’s not forget the Jets need another cornerback. Jets rookie Dee Milliner had his share of ups and downs, while Kyle Wilson found himself in Rex Ryan’s doghouse on far too many occasions.
Revis, who still ranks as one of the NFL’s top corners but got lost playing for a bad Bucs team, was the key to Ryan’s blitzing schemes. His ability to shut down one side of the field made it easier for Ryan to call his blitzes.
Having Revis back would make emerging defensive ends Muhammad Wilkerson and Damon Harrison and talented youngster Sheldon Richardson that much more dangerous.
The initial marriage between Revis and the Jets ended in divorce. Who says the fire can’t be rekindled?
