The New York Mission Society honored the founders and leaders of the Sisulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem, the first charter school to open in the state of New York. Honorees included Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker, William Allen, Martez Moore, Michelle Haynes and Steve and Maureen Klinsky, among others. They were honored at the Mission Society’s Champions for Children Gala at the Plaza Hotel on Wednesday, March 12.

The AmNews’ own Flo Anthony served on the gala’s committee. Valentino D. Carlotti, a partner at Goldman Sachs, is being honored with the Champions for Children Award for his leadership and support of youth organizations, and philanthropist Jean Shafiroff is being honored with the Dina Merrill Hartley Public Service Award for her advocacy work on behalf of human service organizations.
