If your need for heat is calling, you’d better pick it up quickly and then forward your number to the second annual New York City Hot Sauce Expo. There, on March 29 and 30 at the Penn Plaza Pavilion (401 Seventh Ave.), the Scoville units will be tasted, tallied and noted.
Whether you are a novice or a connoisseur, there is something “hot” for everyone at the Hot Sauce Expo. In fact, connoisseurs, bring a novice to teach and taste with! Novices, find a connoisseur from which to learn. And when all of that teaching and learning has netted you a paralyzed tongue, cool down with a cold Lagunitas IPA (@lagunitasbruwhs) and escape to one of the many food vendors.
Jimmy Carbone, owner of Jimmy’s No. 43 (@JimmysNo43) welcomed press to sample some of the fine hot sauces from the expo. Attendees gathered around a table filled to the hilt with hot sauces to sample both alone and with some of the great Brother Jimmy’s 41 food. All the while, an arsenal of judges were sequestered in the back, meticulously tasting each entry to determine the winners of a Screaming MiMi Award. Categories include fruit-based, jalapeno, habanero, all natural, Louisiana-style and more.
