Behind the scenes, the preparation for the Future of Fashion show started a year ago. Throughout this last semester, designers worked with their mentors, who are usually top designers in the fashion industry.

For the fall 2014 show, nine famed designers and major design houses served as mentors to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) students as they created their final collections. A week before the show, these mentors visited each classroom and selected the most exceptional garment created by a student in their group for a special citation as a Critic Award winner.

Fashion “it girl” Alexa Chung will host the annual end-of-year runway show scheduled for May 1 at 7 p.m. at FIT. The show will feature designs by the college’s most talented graduating fashion designers.

The “Future of Fashion is the theme, and certainly the talent of FIT’s graduating class will step up to influence tomorrow’s style. The upcoming fashion show is so anticipated. This year, approximately 85 designers will be selected from a class of 160 students. The professionally produced show will encompass the four women’s wear specializations offered at FIT: knitwear, sportswear, intimate apparel and special occasion. Children’s wear will also be included. All designs will be for fall 2014.

This capsule collection will feature clothes that were created by FIT’s graduating fashion design students. These particular students have spent their final year at the college’s Milan campus at the Politecnico di Milano. Critics are looking forward to viewing these creations, which will also be included in the show.

The show’s host, Chung, is a fashion icon and contributing editor at British Vogue. Chung is also a model, television personality and author of the book “It.” She will bring her own brand of energy and cachet to the Future of Fashion.

The show is supported by a $2 million multiyear gift from FIT alumnus Calvin Klein and his company, Calvin Klein Inc. Klein made a donation of $1 million through the Calvin Klein Family Foundation, which was matched by a $1 million donation by Calvin Klein Inc. For ticket information, visit www.fitnyc.edu.
