City Council Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer, Council Member Corey Johnson, Council Member Carlos Menchaca and other city politicians will participate in Theatre of the Oppressed NYC’s Legislative Theatre Festival on Friday, May 30 at 7 p.m. The event will be held at the Church of St. Luke in the Fields in Greenwich Village. The three-day festival is the brainchild of Theatre of the Oppressed NYC, a nonprofit organization that empowers New Yorkers on the margins to reenact their struggles in the form of original short plays inspired by their own challenges. After each performance, policymakers and audience members are invited onstage to put themselves in the actors’ shoes and find answers to the problems dramatized in the show. The audience and policymakers then team up for legislative session in which policy solutions are debated and voted on in real-time, with the goal of draft bills being presented to the city council, the mayor’s office, and the New York State Legislature.
