The sixth annual Day of Movement, hosted by Giant and his Bartendaz, brought out the masses July 26 in the park at 139th and Lennox to witness and partake in their noted innovative exercise and fitness techniques, using urban playground equipment and street furniture. There were also martial arts displays and help with dietary and blood pressure needs.
“Get back to water and the fundamentals of fruit,” says the “Bar Father,” Giant, founder and president of the community fitness advocacy group. They stress a healthy diet and clean living.
Wearing Bartendaz and Mind Up T-shirts, the Nike-sponsored group put on a marvelous presentation, with disciplined, practiced displays and skilled movement. The men on the bars performed flips and chin-ups, muscle-ups and pull-ups to show their control and ability, followed by the women and the young performers.
Using the inner city landscape, the group encourages young folk to embrace fitness as a lifestyle. “Health is wealth! Movement is medicine,” says Giant.
Groups came from as far as Canada and all over the tristate area to participate in the event, including Easy Work, UrbanFit, Team Definition, the Regimen and the Bar Assassins. For more information on the Bartendaz, visit www.bartendaznyc.com or www.facebook.com/originalbartendaz.
