The Joffrey Academy of Dance, the official school of the Joffrey Ballet, has announced their fifth annual call for the “Winning Works: Choreographers of Color Awards” program. “The goal of the award is to recognize talented and emerging diverse choreographers of color whose diverse perspective will ignite creativity in the form of original works of dance,” according to the release. The deadline for application is Oct. 1.

In all, three winners will be chosen, and they will each receive a $2,500 stipend. The chosen choreographers will be given a minimum of 30 rehearsal hours to set a work that is at least 10 minutes, or at most 12 minutes long, with the international members of the Joffrey Academy Trainee Program and the newly formed Joffrey Studio Company. Winners will also have the opportunity to work closely with Joffrey Academy artistic directors Anna Reznik and Alexei Kremnev.

The final works will be presented by the Joffrey Academy Trainees and Joffrey Studio Company at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and other venues throughout the year. The Winning Works: Choreographers of Color Awards will be held March 7-8, 2015, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Past awardees include Justin Allen, Stefanie Batten Bland and Norbert De La Cruz III.

To apply, interested choreographers must submit the following by mail or email: a DVD or video clip with a five-minute or less excerpt of their choreography, with a brief written description; a letter of intent describing interest in the competition and the kind of work that will be created, in 500 to 1,000 words; headshot; curriculum vitae; and general application, found online at, along with three references.
