The life and legacy of actor, author and activist Ruby Dee was honored with a public memorial celebration on Saturday at The Riverside Church. The service featured tributes and reflections from family, friends, and writers who were influenced by her outstanding life and work.

There was a medley of poetry and prose by Dee read by Angela Bassett, Tyne Daly, Kim Fields, S. Epatha Merkerson, Phylicia Rashad, Elizabeth Van Dyke, Pauletta Washington and Lynn Whitfield. Mayor David Dinkins, Glynn Turman, Woodie King Jr. and Sonia Sanchez gave tributes.

Musical tributes were performed by Alicia Keys, Wynton Marsalis, Audra McDonald, Sweet Honey in the Rock and Peter Yarrow. The family tributes were delivered by her children, Nora Davis Day, Guy Davis, Dr. Hasna Muhammad and Wali Muhammad, and her grandchildren. The eulogy delivered by Harry Belafonte.

Dee died at home in New Rochelle, New York on June 11at the age of 91, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Her joyous life continues through the lives of her family and many friends. Dee was predeceased by her husband, Ossie Davis, in 2005.
