With just a few days left before New Yorkers and the rest of the country go to the polls for the midterm elections, we at the Amsterdam News want you to pause. Take a beat, as they say, take a breath and really think about what you are doing.

America once again sits upon the precipice. We can either give up and give in to the right and let all of our freedoms get stripped away one by one, or we can fight. We can fight by going to the polls, exercising the franchise that our ancestors fought so hard for, and voting for those people who will not work against our interests. We can vote for those who will champion our causes and further our goals.

Or we can stay and home, do nothing and then complain about what this country has become.

We are fighters, we are dedicated, and we are voters. We need to head to the polls with the same vigor as we did when President Barack Obama was first elected. If we can change the color of the presidency, we can change the tide of this country once again and vote in people who will protect our liberties. When we go to the polls next week, we must keep in mind not only what we are voting for but also what we are voting against. While we may not always agree with the other party, whichever one it may be, we can see the kind of damage the other side could hurl upon us. Even if you are not excited about who to vote for, get excited about who there is to vote against and, if necessary, hold your nose. Because we both know the alternative is worse. Go to the polls Nov. 4.
