If you’re out there looking for a job, the Roofer JATC of the Capital District, Local Union 241 might have one for you.

Last week, the New York Department of Labor announced that the union is conducting a recruitment drive from Feb. 19 through Aug. 20 for six roofer apprentices. The openings represent the total number for three recruitment regions in the state: Mohawk Valley, the Capital District and North Country. The jurisdiction for the program includes Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Essex, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren and Washington counties.

According to the DOL, applications will be available at Local Union 241 headquarters, located at 890 Third St., Albany, N.Y., on the third Thursday and third Friday of each month between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. during the recruiting period, excluding legal holidays. Applicants must be at least 18, have a minimum of a 10th-grade education, be physically able to lift 70 pounds, work at heights on low-pitch and steep roofing, climb ladders and scaffolding and work in hot and cold weather

Applicants must also have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes and provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and before indenture.

As the DOL states in its release, under state law, sponsors of programs aren’t allowed to discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.
