On a cold February evening at the Local 802 Jazz Foundation of America in Midtown Manhattan, musicians from the Harlem Blues Band played wonderful jazz music in celebration of saxophone player Fred Staton’s 100th birthday. Along with family and friends, jazz musicians from the Friendly Fifty Club and the New Amsterdam Musical Association came out to give praise and to perform in honor of this centennial birthday.
Rep. Charles Rangel sent a representative with a proclamation for Staton. Special guests who praised Staton and his music included former Mayor David Dinkins, the Rev. Calvin Butts and Cornel West. And, of course, Staton played until the late hours with the other musicians.
