Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) kicks off its two-day Annual General Meeting at the Brooklyn Academy of Music Wednesday night with a reception.

New York Amsterdam News Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Elinor Tatum served as emcee for the program. Actress Cynthia Nixon, NAACP New York State Conference President Hazel Dukes, 1199SEIU President George Gresham, community organizer Tamika Mallory, National Action Network board chairman Rev. Dr. Franklin Richardson and AIUSA National Director of Art Marvin Bing attended the event.

A proclamation from the New York City Council was presented by Brooklyn Council Member Jumaane Williams.

AIUSA’s 50th Annual General Meeting is being held from March 20 to March 22 at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. The theme for the gathering is “From Moment to Movement” focusing on recent injustices in the nation including the police shooting deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.

The organization will be celebrating 50 years of gathering human rights activists from around the country who come together to engage in networking opportunities, plenaries, keynotes and hands-on workshops.
