As parents and students look at options for higher education, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are often times in the conversation.
However, many Black families are misinformed by high school counselors and administrators about scholarships offered by HBCUs. The misconception is that Black students are more likely to get more money from predominantly white institutions.
In a recent article in the Chicago Sun-Times, a Black mother reported that her son’s charter school discouraged him from applying to HBCUs. School officials cited he would not receive enough scholarship money from a Black college.
Below is a partial list of HBCUs that offer full scholarships.
Coppin State University
Baltimore, MD
CSU offers its Golden Eagle Scholarship that covers tuition, fees and room/board. High school students are required to have a 3.2 GPA and a SAT score of 1820. MORE INFO

Incoming freshmen with a 3.8 GPA, a minimum 28 ACT composite or 1250 on the SAT are eligible for Xavier’s Board of Trustees Scholarship that covers full tuition, fees, room/board and a book voucher. MORE INFO

Offering two full scholarships for out-of-state students, incoming freshmen with a GPA of at least a 3.5 are eligible for Benedict’s Trustee or Trustee Club scholarships. MORE INFO

Academically exceptional high school students are eligible for WSSU’s Chancellor Scholarship that covers tuition, fees, room/board and books. MORE INFO
Alabama State University

ASU has three full tuition scholarships for incoming freshmen with a GPA ranging from 3.0 to 3.76, an ACT score above 20 or SAT score above 940. The university’s Presidential Scholarship also pays for room/board, books and an extra $1,200 a year for incidentals. MORE INFO

FAMU’s Distinguished Scholar Award offers incoming freshmen with at least a 3.5 GPA and at least 1800 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT a four-year scholarship worth over $70,000 that pays for tuition and fees. MORE INFO
Claflin University
Orangeburg, S.C.
The Claflin Presidential Scholars Program is a four-year scholarship valued at the full cost of tuition, room/board, textbooks and a monthly stipend. High school students with at least 1200 on the SAT or achieve an equivalent score of 27 or higher on the ACT are eligible. MORE INFO

Offering three academic scholarships, Miles College’s President’s Scholarship covers tuition, room/board and lab fees available for high school students with a GPA of at least 3.7, a 1000 on the SAT or 22 on the ACT. MORE INFO

The school’s University Scholarship offers full tuition, room/board and books for students with a 3.5 GPA and an ACT score of 23 or minimum SAT score of 1050.
