April is Jazz Appreciation Month and the celebration kicked off Wednesday at Sistas’ Place in Brooklyn.
A press conference was held at the music venue recognizing and celebrating the jazz greats. A number of jazz musicians hail from the borough, including Randy Weston, Betty Carter, Gigi Gryce, Max Roach, Noel Pointer, Stanley Banks, Freddie Hubbard, Cedar Walton and Tulivu Donna Cumberbatch.
Renowned saxophonist Hamiet Blueitt opened Jazz Appreciation Month at the press conference. Speakers included community leaders, elected officials and jazz musicians. Got to www.sistasplace.org for information on live performances.
