'It Shoulda Been You' (141323)

Have you ever gone to a musical and as it starts you sense this amazing energy in the theater? You can feel that you are about to be in for a treat and that everything you experience is going to be so much fun! That’s the feeling that I had when attending “It Shoulda Been You,” a new musical playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on West 47th Street, and I was right!

This musical is about a Jewish family—the Steinbergs—that is throwing the wedding of their youngest daughter, Rebecca. The person spearheading everything is her heavyset older sister Jenny. Jenny is constantly put down by their mother, Judy, for her weight and not being married and the need she should feel to want to meet someone and get married.

Jenny mistakenly calls her sister’s ex-boyfriend Marty and that’s when the fun really begins. What happens between the Steinbergs and the groom’s parents, the Howards, is something you have to experience firsthand.

The Steinbergs have strong feelings about Rebecca choosing to marry Brian, who is not Jewish, but in the end, they go with the flow of the day—only there’s something about the flow that no one can predict, including the amazing wedding planner Albert, who seems to be able see catastrophe coming from many angles. This is one of those musicals with a twisting and turning plot that will have you reeling with laughter and shock. I don’t want to give anything away.

“It Shoulda Been You” stars Montego Glover in a featured role and she does a marvelous job, as does her fellow cast members. This cast is a delight to watch and includes Tyne Daly, Harriet Harris, Lisa Howard, Sierra Boggess, David Burtka, Chip Zien, Josh Grisetti, Adam Heller, Michael X. Martin, Edward Hibbert, Anne L. Nathan and Nick Spangler. The book and lyrics are by Brian Hargrove, with music and concept by Barbara Anselmi. There is choreography by Josh Rhodes and incredible direction by David Hyde Pierce. Every laugh is delivered with precise timing.

This is one wedding day that no one will soon forget!
