Not now, that’s not fast enough. Right now! Immediacy is the word. That’s how we movin’—in the moment.
The past is yesterday. The future is tomorrow. In other words, what have you done for me lately? You would think that the constant need to show and prove would be exempt for some, especially if your resume includes six Grammy Awards, two Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, an Academy Award nomination, American Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards and, in a bottom line industry, in excess of 160 million records sold over a 10-album, 30-year-plus career.
Let’s put it this way, a strong argument can be made that every artist who’s doing 100 miles per hour in the superstar lane in 2015 are doing so on the Janet Damita Jo Jackson Freeway. Black Entertainment Television concurs, as she will be blessed with the first ever Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual Award at the 15th annual BET Awards 2015 this Sunday, June 28. Stephen G. Hill, BET’s president of programming, in a statement said, “This is Janet Jackson, people! We are excited beyond belief to present her with our inaugural Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual Award, and we are thrilled that she chose the BET Awards as the first step on her new road.
“An inspiration to many other artists, ‘Ms. Jackson’ blends music, dance and visuals in unique and groundbreaking ways, and we look forward to celebrating her storied history … as well as giving the BET Awards audience a peek into her ‘Unbreakable’ future.” Ciara, Jason Derulo and Tinashe have been selected to perform, but at the BET Awards, don’t be surprised if the list expands. There will be a special dance tribute that is believed to include her just released single, “No Sleeep.”
Just released Monday, June 22, “No Sleeep” reunites the team of Jackson and the legendary musical tandem Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, with hopes of adding another Billboard No. 1 single to the nine they’ve already accrued. Early indicators reveal that she’s well on her way, with the single reaching the top of the Billboard Trending 140. Don’t know what that means but it sounds good.
What I can comprehend, though, is a new album will be coming this fall accompanied by a world tour. The tour, co-produced by the Jackson company Rhythm Nation, begins Aug. 31 in Vancouver, British Columbia, with shows announced for Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, San Diego, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Honolulu. New York City dates have yet to be announced, but fret not, it’s just a matter of when.
For those who are true to the Jackson family legacy, the Jacksons, along with the Commodores, are set to perform Friday, Sept. 4 at Prudential Hall in the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, located at One Center St., Newark, N.J. Tickets are available at www.njpac.org or by calling 888-GO-NJPAC (888-466-5722).
Got some packing to do. Heading out west for the BET Award festivities. Over and out. Holla next week. Till then, enjoy the nightlife.
