Monday morning, over 145 New York City children left for one- and two-week experiences with volunteer host families in suburban and small town communities as the Fresh Air Fund kicks off its 139th program.

The young people between the ages of 6 to 18 boarded buses from the Port Authority Bus Terminal to go to New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and upstate New York.

Some Fresh Air children are leaving home and New York City for the first time, whereas others will visit the same volunteer host families for up to two weeks or more. Hundreds of New York City children will leave for free Fresh Air experiences during the Fresh Air Fund’s first departure of the summer.

The Fresh Air Fund is an independent not-for-profit agency. In 2015, 4,000 children will visit volunteer host families in 13 states, from Virginia to Maine and Canada. In addition, 3,000 young people will enjoy camp, and 2,000 participate in year-round educational programs.

The organization has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million children from low-income communities since 1877.
