Jerame C. Reid (121222)

Cumberland County in southern New Jersey reportedly approved a settlement of $340,000 to the estate of the late Jerame Reid, who was allegedly abused while in jail.

Reid was fatally by Black officer Braheme Days in Bridgeton, N.J., in December 2014. Days claimed he saw a gun in the glove compartment of the vehicle in which Reid was riding. The incident was captured by the officer’s dashboard camera.

At the time of his death, Reid alleged that he was brutally assaulted by corrections officers in the Cumberland County jail in 2009 and filed a lawsuit. He claimed he was punched, kicked, pepper sprayed and had a bucket of cold water poured on him. He suffered broken ribs, a fractured left orbital bone and nerve damage to his face.

The corrections officers involved in the lawsuit petitioned to have the lawsuit dismissed after Reid’s death.

Reid’s widow, Lawanda Hartsfield-Reid, is in control of his estate. She has filed wrongful death and civil rights lawsuits over his death and is seeking $1 million.
