Pace Business College held an awards ceremony for 10 veterans, the event titled “Honoring Those Who Serve, Above and Beyond.”

Said honoree and Harlem Vet Center director Walter Bridgers, “Military people are mission-oriented and never get rid of a mission. You just find different ways to complete the mission.”

For Bridgers, 65, working to assist fellow veterans who are making the adjustment back to civilian life after a career in the armed forces provides just that sense of mission. The Harlem Vet Center provides veterans and their families with outreach, counseling and referral services, including assistance in finding housing, medical referrals and counseling marriage conflict and sexual trauma. Bridgers believes education is the key to allowing veterans to make the successful transition back to civilian life.
