The Chris S. Owens Foundation is hosting its annual “Back to School Giveaway” event Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation.

The event honors Chris Shakim Owens’ 20th birthday by giving out school supplies and resources to kids and communities affected by gun violence. Owens was shot April 26, 2009, by a stray bullet in Harlem at the age of 13. He was taken off life support a week later and pronounced dead.

His father, Chris Foye, started the Chris S. Owens Foundation to extend his son’s legacy and have a positive impact on at-risk youth and young adults to end a culture of gun violence.
