Coming straight out of the ’70s, Anna Sui’s collection takes you on a vintage trip to Alaska and out west to a timeless array of country clothes that range from prairie prints to Eskimo and Native American furs. The boots, and how the designer coordinated them with each outfit, were fabulous! You just want to put on a pair right now.

Sui’s collection is unparalleled in the world of fashion. By mixing vintage styles with her current cultural obsessions, she has effortlessly made some original, exuberant and hip clothes for fall ’15. Whether the inspiration is Victorian cowboy, Warhol superstar or Finnish textile print, her depth of couture knowledge is always apparent. “When I’m interested in something, I want to know everything about it,” said Sui. “I need to know what’s behind it all. I really enjoy the process.”

Her constant search for new ideas and challenges keeps her ahead of her times. Editors and designers are constantly looking in her direction because she is a real trendsetter. As a spectator at her shows, you always feel her boundless energy and creative ingenuity of her runway presentations. Her shows are always a high point of New York Fashion Week.

Sui’s career is a classic American success story. She grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, and today, she has more than 50 boutiques in eight countries, and her collection is sold in 300 stores in more than 30 countries. “You have to focus on your dreams, even if they go beyond common sense,” she advised. “Being a fashion designer was always my dream.”

She still has the same love of fashion that she did when she was 4 years old. She started making her own clothes. Then she mixed a very serious approach to learning her craft with eccentric ideas. For instance, she vowed not to wear the same outfit twice in one year. “I was completely obsessed,” she confessed. “I don’t know how my parents put up with me.” Before the end of her senior year, she was accepted into the Parsons School of Design in New York. During her second year at Parsons, she began styling with her friend Steven Meisel, designed for several sportswear firms and launched her first collection in 1981.

Sui is known for her commitment to things that move her. She also loves rock ’n roll and shopping. She is living her dream. Good Show!
