I did manage to make it out of town for a week in Fort Lauderdale this summer. The trip was work-related so there was no kicking back, but I managed to squeeze in some good food that is worth a couple of shout-outs.

Whenever I see a cluster of food trucks, I feel it is my duty to investigate. There were the requisite fried, bunned and filled, but the question became, “What MUST I eat while in Florida?” Seafood, of course, in the form of a New England favorite, the lobster roll. But this roll from Red Zeppelin (@RedZep812) was topped with lobster bisque (Why didn’t I think of that?) and served with crunchy cole slaw. Just goodness on top of goodness. Thank you.

Also a strong shout-out goes to Key West Conch Shack & Grill (@ConchShaq) for killer fried conch and and a dynamite dipping sauce to go with it. When you are in conch land, you eat conch, and they do it well. Find them and eat lots.

Lastly, I took myself out to dinner craving king crab legs. My research showed Kelly’s Landing (1305 SE 17th St., 954-760-7009, www.kellyslanding.com) was nearby. I started with the best clam chowder I think I have ever had. I was sad when I saw the bottom of the mug. The crab legs hit the spot, but owner Deb really made my brief time special with her warm generous spirit.

Thanks, FLL! Until next time!
