Elombe Brath (74495)

Last weekend a delegation of activists met with President Hage Gottfried Geingob of Namibia. One thing was evident throughout the session: the legend of Elombe Brath.

Brath joined the ancestors May 19, 2014, but his memory was often invoked and duly noted by the delegation and the president, who recalled his steadfast fight for African liberation.

Brath’s unwavering commitment and devout stand for Black self-determination will be recounted once more Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Schomburg Center, when the foundation bearing his name hosts a tribute featuring such prominent freedom fighters as Assemblyman Charles Barron, Dr. Leonard Jeffries, Nana Camille Yarbrough, state Sen. Bill Perkins, Dr. James McIntosh and Viola Plummer.

In keeping with a Brath celebration, there will be music, including performances by Bobby Sanabria and Jimmy Owens, as well as dancers and an auction. The event will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and there is a suggested donation of $50 for a raffle painting by Brath’s widow, Nomsa.
