Brooklyn is famous for some of its biggest and brightest stars, and the month of February is the time of year to celebrate some of them. Black History Month is also a perfect time to pay tribute to a few hometown favorites. Saturday, Feb. 6, more than 150 guests attended the Bedford-Stuyvesant/Crown Heights All-Star Reunion Awards Ceremony, which was hosted by Council Member Robert E. Cornegy Jr. The free event was held at the historic Weeksville Heritage Center, located at 158 Buffalo Ave. in Brooklyn, New York.

The All-Star Reunion was created to celebrate the artistic and cultural fabric of the community, and guests were treated to an afternoon of food, music, live entertainment and a presentation of awards. Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights have managed to produce some of the world’s most talented individuals. The event shared the pride and beauty of the community and honored those who have made a positive impact around the world, past and present.
This year’s honorees included legends such as jazz artist Noel Pointer. His award was presented to his widow Chinita Pointer, who founded the Noel Pointer Foundation in his memory. Other honorees included football coach/mentor Michael Bonham and Alvin Alley’s principle dancer Dwana A. Smallwood, along with a tribute to Broadway great Ben Vereen. Vereen could not be present but promised to attend the event next year in person. He was honored in a m usical presentation by Marion and A.C. Cowings of the Young Hoofers.
E. Cornegy was elated to see the large turnout. He wants to ensure that the arts will continue to grow in his district and throughout the city as well. “As a member of this community, I have always been proud of the homegrown talent that has been produced within it, and I believe it’s important that they continue to be acknowledged,” stated Cornegy.
The Weekville Heritage Center, Carver Federal Savings Bank, Bed-Stuy Gateway BID, ACA Branding Agency and Bed Vyne Wine proudly sponsored the event. The delicious three-course meal was provided by Chef Glaze of Glaze Kitchen.
