AT&T and Union Settlement hosted a college and career mentoring session Feb. 26 with A. Philip Randolph High School students to discuss future career opportunities and goals.
Members of the AT&T oxyGEN Employee Resource Group and volunteers from both AT&T’s Corporate and Retail divisions participated in a panel discussion and breakout sessions geared toward helping students make educated decisions about how to achieve their college and career aspirations.
“AT&T is committed to ensuring that students from every neighborhood have the guidance and skills required to succeed in today’s rapidly changing job market,” said Marissa Shorenstein, president of AT&T New York. “Union Settlement’s work in Harlem is both admirable and necessary, and AT&T is proud to support its efforts to mentor and educate youth in the community.”
AT&T also provided the organization with $10,000 in funding to support its college prep program at high schools in East Harlem.
“Each year, more than 300 youth in our College Readiness Program gain admission to college, most of whom are the first in their families to achieve this dream,” said David Nocenti, executive director of Union Settlement. “Their success is due in part from the support we receive from AT&T that allows us to provide students with the guidance and resources needed to achieve their academic goals, and we thank AT&T for their support of this program.”
OxyGEN is one of AT&T’s 12 Employee Resource Groups, nonprofit groups that provide support, education and mentoring opportunities. OxyGEN is the second largest of AT&T’s Employee Resource Groups, and its membership is comprised of young professionals.
AT&T has partnered with Union Settlement in the past through Aspire, a broad education initiative that has invested over $250 million nationwide in education through sponsorships and grants since 2008. AT&T is committed to advancing education, strengthening communities and improving lives. Through its community initiatives, AT&T has a long history of investing in projects that create learning opportunities; promote academic and economic achievement; or address community needs.
AT&T Aspire is AT&T’s signature philanthropic initiative that drives innovation in education by bringing diverse resources to bear on the issue including funding, technology, employee volunteerism and mentoring. Through Aspire, AT&T passed the $250 million mark on their plan to invest $350 million in education from 2008 to 2017.
