Leading up to this past Tuesday’s Pennsylvania Democratic Primary, the American Federation of Teachers launched a slew of radio and online ads voicing support for candidate Hillary Clinton. The ads targeted African-American voters (mostly in Philadelphia).

The AFT ads discuss what organizational members feel is Clinton’s lifelong support for teachers and families and cite her education record as first lady, as a U.S. senator and as secretary of state.

“As teachers, we understand the importance of having someone in the White House with a proven track record of fighting for students and fighting for our community,” said Philadelphia-based teacher LeShawna Coleman in a digital ad that can be found on YouTube. In another ad, Coleman said, “She’ll work every single day to make sure Pennsylvania kids reach their full potential.”

In a radio ad, Clinton’s bona fides are treated like a report card.

“As a teacher, you’re told to never pick favorites,” reads a female voice. “But I gotta tell you, whenever someone stands out, is eager to learn and helps others, it’s hard not to.”

“She’ll work hard every single day to ensure Pennsylvania kids reach their full potential,” continued the radio ad.

The AFT has already run ads in nine other primary states, including New York, leading up to that state’s primary. This particular ad blitz costs six figures, according to union officials.
