The Montclair African-American Heritage Foundation held the 27th annual African-American Parade and Festival last weekend. The event brought out hundreds of residents, along with local organizations, groups and artists.
The weekend kicked off with a meet and greet at Montclair High School in the George Inness Cafeteria. Saturday, the parade started at the Glenfield School and ended at Nishuane Park, where a festival along Elm Street lasted until the evening.
The parade took place in Montclair’s South End, going down Bloomfield Avenue and Elm Street. This year’s grand marshals were Assemblymember Sheila Oliver and former Montclair Deputy Mayor and retired Montclair Police Deputy Chief Roger S. Terry Sr.
Entertainment at the festival included performances by CeCe Rogers, Eddie Nicholas, Carl Brister, Alexis Morrast, Apollo Theater “Sandman” Cartier Conway and gospel singer Seychelle Elise. Tobias Truvillion from Fox’s “Empire” also made a special appearance.
There was also a special memorial tribute to late hip-hop star Hussein Fatal, who died in a car accident last year at the age of 38.
