It’s summertime, and the fashion look is cool and easy. A number of designers showed a wide array of prints, short and long dresses and swimsuits with cover-ups. The most classic yet colorful cuts and looks came out of the Tommy Hilfiger Spring/Summer ’16 Collection, shown here at New York Fashion Week.
His prints were ethnic prints in fascinating swimsuits, cover-ups and day dresses. Some styles looked folkloric with braided trims and bands of patterns around the hems of skirts, sleeves and collars. The dresses in sky blue were simply pretty. However, his all-American cool signature looks were all on the runway with a unique twist on his classic preppy traditions. Hilfiger is known for dressing women around the world, although he gained a huge part of his fame in the late ’70s and ’80s with a signature hip-hop street line, filled with shorts and T-shirts for young men, along with his luxury classic designs for women.
Today, under Hilfiger’s guidance, vision and leadership as principal designer, the Tommy Hilfiger Group has become one of the few globally recognized brands for apparel, accessories and home. In 1985, he introduced his first signature collection by modernizing button-down shirts, chinos and other time-honored classics with updated fits and details. The relaxed, youthful attitude of his designs remains a distinctive hallmark throughout all of Hilfiger’s subsequent collections.
At Australia’s Fashion Week, Toni Maticevski showed a strong hands-on approach to his designs. There was lots of draping, and his looks were opulent. He balances the design and creation of successful ready-to-wear alongside his practice, catering to one off-shoulder look. Driven by his desire to continually experiment, Maticevski’s works exhibit considerable diversity from one season to another.
In his collection, there are many metal pieces, including jewelry that resembled handcuffs but were bracelets. He likes to push his designs further into the future. There are sculptural pieces that are inspired and supported by the outline of the body. His looks appear seemingly contradictory, showing ideas of structure and fluidity. There are several soft volumes in luxurious fabrications. These looks are very dramatic. Good shows.
