With a reputation of being the very Afrocentric capital of the tristate area, it was fitting that last week Monday, June 13, 2016, the lovingly called “People Republic of Brooklyn” welcomed the newly anointed 51st Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, 40. He is now the traditional ruler of Nigeria’s Ile-Ife, which is recognized as the birthplace of the Yoruba people in Nigeria. Specially invited guests from Africa, the U.S. and all over the Diaspora came to pay respect to the Ooni at a wonderful private reception at the Museum of Contemporary Diasporan Arts Monday in Downtown Brooklyn. Recognizing and supporting African tradition and arts was the theme of the evening. Abiola Oke, CEO of Okayafrica, spoke with the traditional Yoruba monarch about that very topic.
