June 25, 2016, from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., the Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Alfred and Linette Cockfield of Far Rockaway and Brooklyn, N.Y., will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a renewal of vows and a reception titled, “Then and Now—Two Hearts One Love—50 Years of a Wonderful Love” at God’s Battalion of Prayer Church, located at 661 Linden Blvd., Brooklyn, N.Y.
Linette was 18 and Alfred was 21 when they were married back in 1966. The renewal of sacred vows is their golden anniversary gift to each other and to the three generations of their descendants. The ceremony is to be performed Saturday, June 25, 2016, by the Rev. Dr. Errol Bhola of Miami, Fla., and formerly the general superintendent of the AG of Guyana, South America of the General Council of the Assemblies of God.
The Cockfields renewed their 25th anniversary vows in the Poconos in 1991 and consider the three ceremonies to be happy parentheses in a continuing life devoid of glamor and high estate but rich in love and honest friendship.
In 1975, Alfred was licensed to preach by the New York District of the Assemblies of God and ordained in 1982 by the General Council of the Assemblies of God.
Alfred, formerly a “motorcyclist,” “racer of cars” and “engineer by trade” has been, from 1975 to the present, a preacher and teacher with the General Council of the Assemblies of God and started numerous churches and two day schools in Nigeria; St. Vincent and the Grenadines; the Republic of Guyana; Far Rockaway and Brooklyn, N.Y; Wilmington, Del.; and Cahokia, Ill. The Cockfields met and married in Georgetown, Guyana.
They are very involved in their community and partner with churches, the Department of Health, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Cornell University, Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital to provide education and health screenings for their community. The Rev. Cockfield is also involved with Community Board 17, the mayor’s office, community block associations and the 67th Precinct.
They have received numerous accolades, certificates, trophies, awards, proclamations and letters of commendations from their community.
They came to the United States by way of Frankfurt, Germany and Guyana in 1968 and 1969, and they raised their family in Far Rockaway, N.Y., and in the God’s Battalion of Prayer, which they consider their second home.
The icing on the cake for this couple are the golden years that brought two sons (Sheldon and Alfred) and one daughter (Barbara) and seven grandchildren.
Expected to be in attendance is the Hon. Congresswoman Yvette Clarke; the Hon. Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough president; State Sen. Jesse Hamilton and his lovely wife, the Hon. Judge Lorna J. McAllister; City Councilman Jumaane Williams; State Sen. Kevin Parker; and other notables, including clergy from around our fair city and family and friends from around the United States, Canada, England, Caribbean islands and the Republic of Guyana.
God wills, should the Lord tarry and they live, they have a late anniversary trip scheduled in the fall for Fiji, Australia and New Zealand.
