The International African Arts Festival celebrated its 45th year at Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park, July 1 to July 4. The African Street Festival (as it it commonly referred) celebrates the beauty, pride and diversity of African heritage and culture. Thousands of people came to partake in this multiday celebration of good food, good entertainment and good company.Some of this year’s performances included legendary poet Sonia Sanchez, Haitian singer Emelin Michel, Forces of Nature dance group, jazz great Gary Bartz, Ghanaian hip-hop artist Blitz the Ambassador and Nigerian singer Wunmi. In addition to these wonderful performances, there were fashion shows, face painting and vendors selling everything from the African clothing to hand carvings. This is one of the of New York City’s special events that brings the African community together.
