A protest is taking place in Brooklyn on Wednesday, July 13 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the death of Sandra Bland, a Black woman who suspiciously died while in jail in Texas in 2015.
The protest will take place on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Church Avenue subway station located at 1896 Catron Avenue in Brooklyn. The People’s Power Assemblies is organizing the event and one of New York’s Black Lives Matter groups is participating.
The action will also honor all other Black and Brown women killed by police.
Pulled over for a minor traffic violation, Bland was found dead and hanging in her jail cell three days later. Her family vigorously denied the assertion by the Waller County police that the death was a suicide. It is believed that police killed Bland while she was in jail.
Bland was an outspoken opponent of racist police killings before her death.
