Chilean-born actress Leonor Varela appeared at the 9th annual Oceana SeaChange summer party wearing a design by Gauri & Nainika from their Autumn/Winter ’16 collection. She looked gorgeous in their one-shouldered, leaf-printed cocktail dress. Varela, best known for her role in the TV series “Dallas,” also wore gold mesh “Tron” pumps designed by Alejandro Ingelmo.
Gauri and Nainika Karan’s 2002 launch in New Delhi of their label Gauri & Nainika was just the beginning for these talented designers. An eveningwear brand, the label’s focus ranges from cocktail dresses to elaborate, bespoke gowns. For women, they offer glamorous, elegant and chic clothing. With a design philosophy that is distinctly feminine and European, their collections are being retailed at exclusive boutiques in India and the Middle East.
The team is inspired by European fashion, history, art, music, books, personalities, theater, old-Hollywood, red carpet glamour and pictures of their mothers from the ’70s. The brand has always held an extremely feminine and romantic design philosophy. Their styles are luxurious and understated. With a strong emphasis on fabric, cut and color, their designs focus on shape and flattering silhouettes. Design techniques include combining tailoring with drapery. Garments are meticulously crafted and have a timeless appeal featuring old world charm, fantasy and elegance that are then brought up-to-date. Femininity forms the essence of the label, and the paradoxical combination of drama and subtlety can be seen in even the simplest of styles. The label caters to women who like to dress for the occasion. For self-determining women, styles are sophisticated and elegant.
Gauri and Nainika Karan grew up in New Delhi. Originally they were students of economics. However, they were always inclined towards fashion and the creative arts. While growing up, they were constantly inspired by the classics and the romantic looks of old Hollywood heroines, whose timeless elegance has been incorporated into their designs. After studying at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi, they launched their ready-to-wear label Gauri & Nainika. Their designs are now available at www.gauriandnainika.com.
