Thanksgiving is a time for everyone to come together, be generous of spirit and perhaps help others to share the same experience. With the help of organizations such as Citymeals on Wheels and businesses such as FreshDirect, respectively, Harlem’s homebound elderly and residents of the South Bronx will be enjoying their own holiday feast.

Monday, FreshDirect partnered with local South Bronx merchants to distribute 500 turkeys to community members at the Mott Haven Bar and Grill for their Thanksgiving meals. One of many turkey donation events FreshDirect co-hosted for Thanksgiving, Monday’s event brought Ruben Diaz Jr., Bronx Borough President; Letitia James, public advocate for the City of New York; and Jason Ackerman, co-founder and CEO of FreshDirect together to hand out the Thanksgiving staple and holiday greetings.

Last week, executive chef of Harlem’s The Cecil, JJ Johnson, chef Leah Cohen of the Lower East Side’s Pig & Khao and master baker Elizabeth Faulkner joined forces to plan, cook and deliver gourmet meals to the doors of New Yorkers who are too frail to shop and cook for themselves as part of Citymeals’ monthly Chefs Deliver program. Cohen cooked up a menu of braised chicken adobo with jasmine rice and coconut creamed kale, and Johnson and Falkner joined created a menu of grilled chicken with kale salad and stewed black beans and homemade ginger cookies. Sounds delicious!

It’s never too late to help others during the holidays. Visit to donate and find out how you can help others in your community and beyond.
