The African Women’s Development Fund-USA (AWDF-USA joins #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.
A 501c3 organization incorporated in New York, AWDF-USA’s unique approach #GivingTuesday is two-pronged: It seeks to attract more friends and followers on social media (Facebook and Twitter specifically) while also raising funds via PayPal amongst American donors in support of its sister foundation African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) based in Ghana which has funded more than 1,200 African-women led not profits in 42 African countries with grants totaling $US26 million.
Occurring this year on November 29, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and after the widely recognized shopping events known as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. For five years now it has served as the new kick-off to the holiday giving season and has helped inspire people to give back in impactful and creative ways. Since its inaugural year in 2012, people and organizations contribute financially, donate volunteer hours, give food and supplies, grow their social media networks, and think of other ways to involve themselves in meaningful causes. In 2015, more than 45,000 partners in 71+ countries participated in the #GivingTuesday movement. Through the power of social media, the hashtag was mentioned more than 1.3 million times in 2015, resulting in milestone trending on Twitter and most importantly, a tremendous increase in financial donations.
AWDF-USA seeks to tap into this season of giving by highlighting its 15-year history and work in the realm of African philanthropy. AWDF-USA was created by a coalition of American women leaders and the leadership of AWDF – experienced African women’s development and philanthropy leaders – to spread awareness about the tremendous impact of African women-led organizations on communities across the continent.
The organization provide philanthropic advisory and management services, research, education, travel, and seek to connect more directly with American donors from all walks of life who appreciate the importance of supporting African philanthropy.
